Apps for kids!

e Are Launching Soon

Recently I have been asked by a few people what apps the kids use; so I decided to make a blog about it.
This one is about the apps that my son loves to use, I will do one shortly about what ones my little girl likes to use too!
The majority of these apps are free, or at least have a free trial for you to see if your children enjoy them! =]

Alphabet

  • Meet the AlphablocksBased on the Cbeebies T.V show. It teaches your child the sounds that letters makes.
  • Talking ABC- by Hey Clay. This app helps children to learn the alphabet and links an animal to each letter. It also has several mini games, point to the right letter, puzzles, who is it, memory game and a few more.
  • Endless ABCby Originator. This app is by far the favourite among with others made by them. You can choose from a huge range of words, it then jumbles the letters up and a shadow is left for where they belong. As you move each letter it sings the sound that it makes. When you have completed the word it then explains to you what the word means and shows you a short clip to explain it.
  • ABC Phonics- by Pink Fong. This app sings a little song about the letter you choose with many words in it that begin with the same letter. It then teaches you how to write these letters in lower and uppercase. There is also a mini game for each letter too!

Numbers

  • Toddler Counting 123-by giggle up. This app brings up a random number of items and as you click on each picture it counts them for you.
  • Endless 123-by originator. You can choose whatever number you like and it moves and leaves a shadow for you to move the number to. along with a few numbers either side of it. It then does a simple sum for what would create your chosen number. Then it will do a little story about the number too!
  • Lets Count- by Fisher Price. This counts 1-5 with lovely, bright and simple to count animals. It sings a lovely song too.

Colouring & Drawing

  • Dipdab- based on the Cbeebies show. This is a great little app where you get a short little animation with dipdab at the start and then you are given a dashed line to show you what to draw. Then your drawing is used in the next bit of animation.
  • Rain Cubes by unity. You are given a blank page and as you touch around the screen coloured cubes drop down and form a 3D picture.
  • Drawing Pad- You can either draw on a blank page or on a picture that you have taken. As you draw it plays a lovely little tune and when you stop it stops the tune.
  • Touch Free-by unity. This app brings up simple shapes which are white on a black background and plays relaxing music. You then draw over the white to complete the picture.

Games & Fun

  • Playtime-by Cbeebies. This is a wonderful app, it has lots of games on it from different programs on Cbeebies. All very simple, easy and fun!
  • Sago Mini- This is the maker of a wide range of apps. Vivid colours, fun and easy games. Our favorites by them is; Roadtrip, where you get to choose a car, pack a suitcase and drive down a road encountering lovely flowers, animals etc. Music box, you fly about in different forms of transport and when you click up high it plays the high notes and low for low notes from well-known nursery rhymes. Monsters, is where you get different shapes to choose from, you can then draw on them, add items etc to them. You then get to feed them, brush their teeth etc.
  • Totoby Dr.Panda. You look after a little tortoise by wwashing him, making him sandwiches, giving him medicine when he is sick etc!
  • Magic Tracks- by budge. This is a game based around Thomas The Tank Engine. It is like your own miniature railway track. You drive Thomas around and come across mini games and unlock other engines and items to place around your track!
  • First wordsby Tiny hands. This is a great app for them to learn a wide range of things from clothing names, shapes, food etc. You get one of the items at a time and have to match it to the same picture. When you have done this it tells you the name of the item!
  • Get Well Soon-by Cbeebies. This app teaches your children about going to the hospital, and learning about the human body.

Video

  • Disney Life£5.99 a month. Can be put onto ten devices. It has nearly all of the Disney movies, programs, cds and books on it. You can download them so that you can use them when you are not connected to the internet. You can also watch the Disney channels live.
  • Netflix- £5 a month. Again a whole range of videos and movies. You can also download the majority of these so you can watch them offline too!
  • Iplayer kids– This has all the cbeebies & CBBC programs on it. You can download these to watch offline and has many seasons for all of their programs on it.
  • StoryBotsMany short videos on her about the alphabet, numbers, shapes, dinosaurs, colours etc on it! Lovely simply videos and catchy tunes to aid with learning!
  • YT KidsThis is a great app as it means that you can leave your child to browse through many videos that are all safe for kids!

I hope your children enjoy these! If you have any apps that your little ones like I would love to hear about them and add them to their Ipads!

Our Favorite Sensory Items!

I just thought I’d make a little blog about a few of the things that I have in my house that my little man really loves and and helps calm him down! I’m going to do another one on his favorite toys that he has too! It may help you with ideas on what to get your little ones! =] Oh and before we get started, all these things have been bought by myself or friends for my little ones, so these are all very honest reviews!

One of my best buys of last year was this giant bean bag, it is fantastic, he will lay on it and watch TV/his ipad/the lights and fold it in half and it makes it more solid and it doubles up as a seat to play his adorable little Ukulele on, and to just chill out on, its wonderful. It’s big enough so that both him and his sister can fit on it with a gap between them! He loves the feel of the beans in the inside too and the sound of them when he rolls about on it! The cover on this one can be taken off and washed if needs be and it is also waterproof so it means that I don’t have to be worried about drinks and the such on it! This is the one I got and you can get it in lots of different colors! I chose the purple as its a nice color for both boys and girls it is also dark so hides stains a little ;] heres the link >>  [Click Here]

This is another of his favorites and is one of the best things for calming him down. My best friend got him this for Christmas as she knew that he would love to watch the lights on it, its a wonderful thing and such a thoughtful gift too! I was so surprised by how well it covered the whole living room in wonderful stars and moons in lots of colors! You can have it so that there is just one color, two, three or four! There is also a setting so that it can rotate, be still or flash! We prefer the rotating one with two colors! Sometimes all four is just a bit too much going on for my little man! Though my little girl loves when all four colors are on and rotating as she thinks its like a dance party! This also comes with a cover so that it is just on the lights itself, we don’t use this much as he likes to lay down on his bean bag and watch it all on the roof and walls! This light can be bought on amazon and is such a bargain! I would recommended getting a wall plug for a usb too, as it goes through a lot of batteries if you have it on as much as we do! It comes with the wire to be plugged into a usb! [Click Here]

He really loves this Fiber Optic light, it fades from color to color slowly, when he is having a tough day or is in the middle of a meltdown this really helps! I brush it along his legs, feet, hands, tummy etc and it really relaxes him! He loves to use it as a paintbrush on the floor and watch the colors change! Unfortunately for the dog he also likes to use it on her fur and watch it change color! Fortunately enough she sleeps through it all and doesn’t bat an eyelid! I bought this in sainsburys(supermarket).. and i actually went back the next day and bought another couple as they were on sale and he loves it! I didn’t want to risk it breaking and being stuck without out! I’m sure you can get them on amazon too, but I wont provide a link as I cant say that they work well etc! sorry!

Finally we have this cute little tent which is from Ikea! [Click Here To Have A Look]
He would spend all day inside here, happy as larry! The only downside is that he wants me to go in it with him too.. which is OK for a short while, until I have to do other mum things like make dinner or do the washing! He uses this as a little escape pod idea, if he needs time out, his sister is being too nosey, or there is just too much going on for him!

His favorite thing of all though is when we put these all together! The bean bag inside the circus tent, and the stary light up close to the outside with the lights off in the room. He will lay on the beanbag, watching the stars. It means that if he is having a real hard time when he head-bangs he can’t hurt himself, I know that he is safe and can try and keep myself in check to calm him down the best I can too. He will than lay in here a while once he has calmed, standing  up to try and catch the stars and loves the sound of the tent when he hits it. So i will hit the top of it and shake it so it soothes him with the noise as well.

All these items are just fantastic and really do change his life for the better.
If you have any other suggestions on things your little ones have that really help them or things you have yourself please let me know!
Hope these ideas have helped some of you too! =] They are all decent prices, as i have found a lot of the sensory items have huge price tags, so I have compromised and these work fantastically for us, for now!
Oh and don’t forget the bubble machine! Everyone loves bubbles!

A Miracle! – The Rabbit who wants to fall asleep!

Recently there has been a lot of people ranting and raving about how fantastic the book “The rabbit who wants to fall asleep” is! Being the person I am I thought that it would never work.. but seeing more and more reviews and people going crazy for it, I thought I had to give it a shot!

547ecc2d4cf7925b052a96f010ee82baa6f8b3f4

If you haven’t heard of this book, it is written by the Swedish psychologist Carl-Johan Forssen Ehrlin. She promises to have a child nodding off in no time, with a perfect combination of sentence structure and hypnotic words. Now my child is a very energetic one, and she did use to sleep really well, but as of recent it has taken a long time to get her to go to sleep, especially in her own bed! We tried the usual of star charts, getting to go places if she went to sleep first time and slept in her own bed.. everything! Nothing seemed to be working.. Until now!

The way the book works is that is gives suggestions to your child without your child really realizing that it is time to sleep, and to relax. It is important that you look at this book yourself first before you read it to your child as at the front it explains to you what all the different text styles mean in book. for example, if it is italics you read the words slowly and in a calm voice. It really helps to familiarize yourself with the book first before trying to read it right off the bat! There is also an audiobook of it which you can listen to with your child, or as I did, I listened to it first to see how it was intended to be read!

Here is the link to the audio of it on youtube! You could also play this to your child!

When I first got the book I was a bit thrown back by how long it was, 10 pages with small writing on them! My initial reaction was that.. she is never going to stay still long enough for me to finish this and i going to be up there for ages trying to get her to stay still and to listen to the whole book.. but I didn’t let this out me off! I went on with and thought that I would give it a chance!

Night 1 – She didn’t want to lay down, I got quizzed about every character, she didn’t like the wizard and she didn’t like the name of the snail. Though as I continued to read the story to her I could see that it was making her tired, and she didn’t like this! She was shaking her head, holding her eyes open and the such, fighting lovely sleep! Why would you do that! I left her room after reading it to her and she was asleep very quickly and didn’t come down stairs at all.. normally it would be at least three times! I was then convinced that she was on to what this book was wanting and would not be letting me read it to her again!

Night 2 – When she was doing her night time routine of going to the toilet and brushing her teeth she asked me would I read her the sleepy book again and would I call the rabbit something different and not do the wizard bit with the magic dust as it got in her eyes, so I did this. She didn’t ask as many questions about the book and lay down the whole time! She asked me to sit on the floor so that she could put her ffeet of the duvet and rolled over and was actually listening to the story without 1001 questions and was so close to sleeping! Though again she didn’t come down once and I’m assuming she was asleep very quickly! This gave me a bit more hope about the book, as it was obviously helping her get to sleep!

Night 3(tonight) – She wasn’t as convinced that she wanted the same story again (I don’t blame her!) but I told her that I would change the names to whatever she wanted again and then she was excited for it again! She lay in her bed and I sat on the floor from the start so that she would be able to get comfy! At the start she was asking me questions and could I change the story etc.. So I tried to a bit!(oops sorry!) Though it was just missing out certain bits that I knew got her asking questions etc .. she curled up to how she normally falls asleep before the first page had finished and then stopped asking questions, was shuffling about so I carried on reading.. by some miracle she was asleep by page four! I was amazed.. I came skipping downstairs to my husband to let him know how quickly she had fallen asleep, without any questions or being told to lay day several times! She just did it all by herself! This book really works!

Now for my review and honest thoughts on it all;
It is absolutely fantastic that this book made her go to sleep while I was reading it, even if it wasn’t the first night, it clearly helped her relax greatly! I am still amazed that a book could help her fall asleep and that she didn’t get bored by it, or tell me that she wanted something else! I can see how it works because the amount of times that the word sleep/relax is incorporated into the story! I’m hoping to read it to her one more night and then be able to read her other stories and she will fall asleep to any one as she knows that she can then relax and listen to the story rather than asking 101 questions about why someone is saying what, or doing what etc! I wouldn’t want to be reading her this book every night mainly because at the moment there is only one and she will quickly bore of it, though they do plan to make more!  Also because I rather enjoy letting her chose a book at bed time! I do think I will incorporate this book into our life though! If she has had a long day, is going to have a long day the next day, or has something stressful (first day of preschool) etc coming up I will read it to her then!
So; if you have a child who is difficult at bed time, i really urge that you try out this book! You will not know what has happened! Give it a few days though and don’t expect it to work straight away! You must try it though!  :]

If you do end up trying it let me know how you get on with it!
I hope you are as amazed as me!

Flying with a baby/toddler!

Traveling with little ones is always going to be a bit of a tasks! Especially whenever you are flying as you then try to ensure that they are quiet and happy so that they don’t disturb everyone elses flight too! Having been on four flights with a three year old a three month old last month I’m going to share with you what I did and how I entertained them! Two of the flights were three hours, that was our lovely visit to Portugal and the other two were an hourish each, and that was to Wales!

I will start with my little three month old, he was a delight to travel with! You Just obvioulsy have to make sure you have enough milk, some teething rings, a rattle and if they use a dummy one of them too! My little man doesn’t really use a dummy much at all but I took one for the take offs and landings so that his ears didn’t pop! He was such a dream to travel with, minus the extra luggage and so forth that you had to bring! If any of you are taking a little babies away I hope they travel as well as he does!

Now onto the three year old, hyperactive little girl.. She was actually really super to travel with, which I was shocked by! I expected her to be running up and down the plane and then going nuts whenever she had to sit still! So here is all that I did to encourage her to sit still! First of all I went out and bought her, her own little suitcase! It had wheels on it like everyone elses (She loves to be the same), it also had straps on it so that if she got tired from wheeling it or we were getting on the plane it was easy for me to pick up and put on my back! I also choose one that was appealing to her, it is a lovely shade of pink with a purple front pocket and a picture of Sofia the First on it! She was overjoyed by this as Puple is her favorite colour and Sofia the First is a popular T.V show in our house! I then went about filling it with some lovely goodies that she hadn’t seen before & kept the bag hidden before the morning we went! One of the first things I should tell you is that she also currently loves, Yo Gabba Gabba so I tried to get some items that were related to this! Firstly I got her a set of Yo Gabba Gabba books that were simple and repatitve so that she would be able to join in when reading! Brightly coloured pictures in them coupled with reading them in rather stupid & embaressing voice kept her assumed for a short while & they were also great night time reading before bed on holiday! Another great thing that she has is a kids tablet, Nabi. I took this the night before we were flying and put on some new apps that she hadn’t seen before and a few movies to entertain her during the flight. This then with a pair of headphones was a charm! I hadn’t really thought about using headphones with it before, but it stopped the constant quizzing and everyone else having to listen to what she was playing/watching! It seemed to make her concentrate a lot more on it! She watched the Moshi Monster movie after playing a few apps(i’ll do a post soon with the apps we love) and then fell asleep while watching, so that was an hour of peace when I didn’t have to worry! Also in her bag was a Frozen Magnetic scribbler which attached to the bottom had a little book with a story in it and step by step pictures of things to draw! I wasn’t sure that she would use the book much and expected her to do the usual manic scriibbling, but she actually concentrated really hard to copy the pictures, similar to this I also had in a colouring book which came with colours on the front of it! My little girl also loves sticker books and finding the right place for stickers to go, so I also had one of those hidden in her bag! One thing that I had in her bag that she was too little for really was a younger verision of a tommagotchi, she played with it for about five minuites then go bored of it! The last two things that were in her bag was a much loved lalaloopsy doll and a teddy. She loved these greatly because she is a lover of role play and getting everyone to make her toys talk to her! When at the airport I also let her choose a magazine!

When on the airplane, I would advise to sit them beside the window, then during take off and landing you can look out the window with them and explain what is happening and they can see the views! Wave bye bye to your house and then Hello to the hotel! She got a ‘Snack Pack’ when on the plane too and she found this very exciting and that it was special airplane food!

Well, I hope this has helped at least a little bit & been interesting!  If your going on Holiday, Have a fantastic time!

Injections!

Another appology for not blogging much,, but I have a valid excuse, we were on holiday in Portugal then we were only home fr a week and went to Wales so that all the family who live there could finally meet my perfect little man!

I’m going to do a few blog posts over the next few days to catch up with it all! Though first.. how the dreaded injectio went!

Golly,, it is so much easier when they are little tiny babies! Aw, it really wasnt that bad! She was a brave girl! I wasnt sure at the start of the day if I should tell her what was to come or not.. I decided to tell her so that she could be prepared! I didnt want to just turn up at the doctors and blag my way through it! When I broke the news to her she was pretty nervous, though when i said that she could get a Mcdonalds and go to the toy shop after .. she seemed pretty excited! I know right…

Whenever we got to the doctors there was a few other children her age who had just had the injection or were waiting,, I was nervous that this would make it worse/harder for her, but whenever a little girl came out in floods of tears,I couldn’t have been more impressed with my princess! She went oer and asked her what was wrong and whenever the little girl told her se had just had an injetion she replied with “It’s just sore a little while, do you want a cuddle!” How dam adorable is that! It was then time for her injection.. We went into the doctors room and chatted away to the lovely nurse and then it was time.. I had to hold her wrists as they were doing both injections at the same time! What a fantastic idea, meant it was all over at once! When I held her wrists she was like “Mummy what are you doing” then bam .. injections, a big scream from Amellia a hedbutt to my nose (very sore), a quick cuddle and then the tears were all done! We went back out into the waiting room and she was playng away with the trains!!

So, my advice.. Don’t listen to the people who say its the worst and so forth,if you prepar your littlen and give them a little bribe and a reason to be brave through it.. it will be great! Though just watch you nose! ;]

Now to get my three month through them next week!
