Tom’s Storytime

Tom gave me the wonderful opportunity to review his books that he has been developing along side a website and an app for children! Today is launch day for his books and website! Here are my thoughts on the books and website! =]

Tom’s storytime is broken down into three different areas; Sprites which is for children aged 0-6, Adventurers which is 3-8 and Interactive which is for any age that loves to get involved in the story!

Whenever I received these books I was very excited for bed time to share them with my little girl and see what she would make of them! I had a quick flick through them before she got home from school, and really loved the art work in the first book we were sent to review. Very bright, colourful and cute little characters!

When it was bed time we snuggled on the sofa with my laptop in front of us and told Amellia we would be reading a new book today and that it was on my laptop.. now that bit confused her! But Tom has told me that you can purchase these books on Amazon for £5.99 each today or 99p each for on the Kindle! I personally prefer a real book for the kids to handle and flick through rather than one on a device but that choice is up to you as he has made both available!
Bug hunt was my favourite one out of the selection that I was sent, and it is for the Sprites!

bug hunt girl.pngCheck out how cute she is! She heads off on an adventure to catch some bugs, but it doesn’t always go her way! There are lots of catchy little phrases and sayings in this book! It also teaches little ones some things about bugs too and the little twist at the end is fantastic and made my little girl rethink what she thought of this certain mischief little bug!
She really enjoyed the book and has had it reread to her several times after asking for it!

The next book.. I wasn’t so keen on but my little girl loved it and said it was her favourite one out at the lot we had! To me I thought the main character actually looked a little creepy, but it seemed that was just me as my daughter loved this book!
chicken.png

This is Davey Chicken and his book is for the Adventures! It has lots of rhyming words in it and catchy little sayings that by the end of the book my little girl was joining in with saying them. In this book he is a very bad chicken, though by the end something has changed him, but what is it?
Take a read and see! =]

If you fancy purchasing either of these books or having a look at the other ones Tom has created, check them out here.

Alongside the books he has also created an interactive website with videos of the story’s being read to you by a lady in a wonderful wooden story time chair!
On the website there is also the first of the interactive books that he has made, I have watched this and I am sure my little girl will have lots of fun letting her imagination go wild as she listens! You can listen to both of those books being read and enjoy the interactive book here!

Be sure to pop over to his twitter- twitter.com/Toms_Storytime
and his facebook – www.facebook.com/TomsStorytime/
Then you will be able to see when new and exciting things are added to his website! =]

More Fudge!

Yes, I know my most recent blog was one about fudge but after making that simple fudge I remembered the fudge that I made last Christmas so I thought I would share it with you too! This fudge is pretty simple to make too, but not quite as simple as the last one! No thermometer or anything though so us folk without one can make this too! =D

          Ingredients

  1. 350g Icing Sugar
  2. 75g Unsalted Butter
  3. 4 Teaspoons Milk
  4. 1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla Essence
  5. 75g Pink & White Marshmallows or Small Ones!
  6. Sprinkles
  7. Small Baking Tray
  8. Baking Paper

wpid-imag6644.jpg

Method

  1. Line the Baking Tray with the baking paper
  2. Use a sieve sift the icing sugar into  large bowl and make a hollow in the middle
  3. Put the butter, milk and vanilla essence into a small pan. If you have used large marshmallows cut them in half! If you have used the little ones like me, then you can just put them in!wpid-imag6645.jpg
  4. Gently heat the marshmallows etc in the pan and stir the mixture every so often untill it has all melted!
  5. Pour the mixture into the hollow of the icing sugar and then quickly mix it all together untill it goes smooth!
  6. Pour the mixture into your baking tray and spread it out so it is all flat
  7. Put the sprinkles on top! Make sure you push these into the  fudge so they they will stay there! wpid-imag6647.jpg
  8. Place it in the fridge for a few hours
  9. Take it out an cut it up… Enjoy! wpid-imag6649.jpg

Now to get back to a few more “normal” posts in the next few days! If you try this let me know how it turns out and what you think! I really enjoy it and have made it for my little girls party!

Simple Must Try Fun!

With my little girl just starting preschool we have been trying to find ways to keep her busy but aren’t that strenuous as she is coming out of preschool exhausted and grumpy! She is really enjoying herself which is such a great thing and I’m starting to get used to the afternoon classes rather than the usual ones! This week is her first week of being in everyday! The hubby came home from work and was greeted by an exhausted me (my little man has lost his great sleeping ='[) and a hyper, yet grumpy girl as she was knackered! Until he announced that he had a fantastic idea! I sighed.. expecting it to be something utterly ridiculous, loud and messy… to my surprise it was not!
He looked at me and said “i just need some string and a hanger?” I was a bit suspicious.. what could you do with a bit of string and a hanger? This did not sound like fun.. it sounded like a big old let down! My oh my was I wrong!
I watched as he tied a bit of string from our door handle to the fire place, then ran upstairs and appeared with a hanger and my little girls favorite teddy/puppet who has fittingly been called “Monkey” .. I’m sure you can guess, he is monkey! She was bouncing about the place asking me what it was for and she was getting very excited… and I just was just very confused by it .. he then announced it was a Zip-line! I still couldn’t see how.. until he showed us!

As you can see by the look on her face.. this was one of the best things she had ever seen! She thought this was so fantastic! Such a simple idea and she had hours of fun! Everyday since she has had the zip-line!

So all you need is a length of string and two places to hang it.. the higher the better and a kids trouser hanger!
Little miss got a bit concerned that it would hurt her lovely toys, so we got them to “hold” on with there hands!

This is how monkey and how he held on! =]

Such a simple thing, yet entertained my little ones for ages and the dog! She thought it was great trying to catch a moving target.. Little miss didn’t appreciate this too much though so Lilo got a pigs ear and was happy as Larry to let the Zip lining continue! =] Little Miss loved it so much she even had to facetime nanny so that she could see the fun monkey was having!

Do you guys have any simple things that your little ones love?
If you try this let me know what your little ones think! =D

Traditional Sweets!

Sugar Mice! These little sweets full of sugary goodness hold some great memories for me! When I saw a recipe for them in my daughters magazine I knew that I just had to make them! When I looked at the recipe I was amazed at how few ingredients they actually required! With it coming up to my dads birthday I decided that I would make them for him, seeing as he loves them and they seem to be one of the few sweets he eats!

The memories that they hold for me are greatly linked to my dad too! He loves rugby, he is a very huge rugby fan! Hence the present I have got him (WRU polo shirt!) So, anytime that went to a rugby match over in Wales, we used to get a bus in from my aunties house, then walk from the stop we always got off at, through a little market and he would always go into this little old sweet shop that had the sweets in the big jars, and sugar mice! He would come out with one each for all of us, we would then thoroughly enjoy eating them then, then carried on the walk to the rugby ground!

Now, onto the recipe!

Ingredients! (Makes 12)

  •  1 Egg White
  • 1 Tsp Lemon Juice
  • 500g Icing Sugar (Sifted)
  • Pink Food Colouring
  • Small Chocolate Sprinkles (or something small for eyes)
  • Thin String (strawberry laces also work!)
  • Baking tray, lined with baking parchment

Recipe!

  1. Put the egg white into a bowl and whisk until it turns foamy
  2. Slowly add in the icing sugar and stir as you are doing it. It will turn into a dough!
  3. Divide the mixture into two bowls and add some pink food colouring and kneed it into the dough type mixture.
  4. Break off conker sized pieces and then roll them into a cone shape. The narrow end will then be the mouses nose.
  5. Pinch little cute ears on to the mouse, then use whatever you have chosen for the mouses eyes and push them in.
  6. Cut a length of the string and then push it into the dough at the back.
  7. Use the Pink food colouring to add a little nose.
  8. Repeat until you have used all of the mixture and then leave them on the baking tray to dry out for at least 12 hours!
  9. ENJOY! =D

It is a lot harder to make that little mouse shape than it looks to be honest! I would love to see if you guys have made these and how you found it! My little girl tried to help make these and she just ended up getting annoyed at it! She decided to just make a “Mouse squish” .. basically just crushed the mixture! lol!

Have you ever had these before? If not, you really should try them out! =]
Any other traditional sweets that you used to have?

Valentine’s Day, NI silver

Me and the hubby generally aren’t ones to do Valentines day, but whenever my sister (http://daydreamingfoodie.com) sent me a link to the most beautiful necklace I had to have it!
It was of Scrabo tower, which is a landmark in Newtownards which is a town in Northern Ireland. Scrabo tower means a lot to me and my hubby as it is where we first got together again and went for a walk and fell in love (at least on my side :P) It is also where he purposed to me and now we go on walks there with the little ones too! So as you can tell from all that has happened there it does mean a great deal to us and holds a special place in our hearts. Once I had seen the necklace, I knew that I must acquire it and wear it everywhere because of the great deal that Scrabo means to us! It was also made more beautiful to me because it was handmade here in Northern Ireland too. I love handmade things and buying from local people!

Whenever my hubby met the lady he said that she was also super lovely, she let my little one choose earrings for me too and then her child and mine played for a while! it makes something even more special whenever it is made by an equally lovely person, I contacted her on twitter to tell her how much I loved the necklace and was trying to bribe the hubby to get me them! Upon having a little chat with her I discovered just how lovely she was! I was chatting with her about how my little girl really wants one now too and that I would prefer if possible if the earrings could be made into a stud style … and she replied with how she loved new challenges and would work on doing a copper little Scrabo for her and on seeing how the earrings worked as studs.. what a lovely lady! Not only was she just lovely, she was excited about trying new challenges just for me… it made me feel a little special! 😛 So now I am eagerly awaiting to see how these little challenges she has set especially for me turn out!
I really advise a little visit to her page on etsy
She has some gorgeous little things! A little sheep who is also very adorable ;] I know she would also appreciate a little follow on twitter (@NISilver_COM)
